Navigating the Challenges of a Long-Distance Romance

The avenue of online dating has literally opened the world to romantic possibilities, with the chance to connect with members across the globe.

For some, the challenges associated with an international long distance relationship seem too difficult overcome, and everyone has to find their own comfort zone in a venue like this. For others though, that challenge has been navigated, and the story of Stephen and Ruth is just the latest in a string of recent CatholicMatch member stories with a global flair.

Stephen and Ruth turned a Kansas-to-Peru online connection into marriage.

Stephen and Ruth turned a Kansas-to-Peru online connection into marriage.

Stephen is 44-years-old and lives in Kansas, while Ruth is five years younger and is from Peru. They connected on CatholicMatch and began exchanging messages. The common bond in those emails led them to start Skyping together, and putting a voice and body language with the words.

"Then, I went to Peru," Stephen said, recalling his step out into the unknown. Ruth made a return visit to Kansas. The exchange of visits was one big stepping stone in a three-year process that saw he and Ruth get married at the end of 2012. There were no shortage of challengesaside from those associated with growing a relationship, Stephen needed to get a fianc' visa, as he is relocating to Peru.

An international romance isn't for everyone and there is no right or wrong choice in this regard, but if you're someone who has been open to it, but hesitant because of the challenges, Stephen and Ruth are just one of the couples who have shown it can work. Just a few recent examples on our member highlights include:

*Jacob & Esther exchanged over 200 messages, used Skype and most importantly, relied heavily on the power of prayer, particularly the intercession of St. Joseph. It resulted in her leaving Washington state to join him in Australia.

*Joe & Vanessa were from Cleveland and the Philippines respectively, but a love for music brought them together and a novena to St. Raphael unleashed a torrent of grace that the Pacific Ocean couldn't stop.

*Santiago & Ava found that Skype was enough to keep them together as they dealt with the gap between South Africa and Utah. Skype was even present at their wedding, allowing her family to watch the ceremony long-distance.

*Stephen & Catherine are another United States-to-Australia story, and an inspiring example of how staying true to yourself is what brings you to the right person.

These are but a few. The archives of the member stories built up over the years are filled with additional examples. Did you or someone you know find love on CatholicMatch? We would love to share your story with other members. Go to our member story page for more information.
