See Joe, whenever I hear people talk about "big government," that seems strange to me. The size of government isn't really an issue in Canada.

What do I look for in government? Just basic human rights like the right to food, water, and shelter, the right to health care, and security. Basically, a social safety net in case I fall on hard times and need some support before I get back on my feet and can take care of myself again. I wouldn't say at all that I feel dependent on government, but I want to know that I have a safety net if I ever need it.

Consider this Joe: $6 billion dollars was spent in the last US presidential election. That could have gone to medical research, charity, health care, space exploration. The problem is that the fat cat billionaires have their hands in the pockets of the politicians in both parties. They get their campaign money, the corporations get the deregulation that they want. Perhaps a ban on corporate donations could go a long way. Our Conservative Party actually did that in Canada. No one here is allowed to donate more than $1000 and donations from both corporations and unions are now illegal.

Amazing how under George W. Bush they cut taxes for rich people, starved the government of revenue, and then claim that government is failing and can't do anything right. And people believe it... Except that government got huge under both Bushes and under Ronald Reagan.

Lowering taxes actually increased revenues. The problem is that Congress found more way to spend than they took in. Think of it in these simple terms, why does McDonalds make so much more money selling hamburgers for $1 than the gourmet burger joint that sells a much better hamburger for $6?

Also, if as you say, that if basic human rights include food, shelter and health care, who provides this if there are not enough farmers and doctors? Are they slaves? Are we forcing people to provide these services if there aren’t enough? Just as Joe said. These are not rights, they are your responsibility as an adult to provide them for you and your family. O course, we do need safeguards to help those who need it.

Does it make sense that the “Affordable Health care Act sanctions the hiring of 16,000 lawyers but no doctors? So much for Government doing things right.

Hi Ron et alia,

I sure am glad to hear that health care is not a right. Good! Close all those VA hospitals, and all the vets can sign up for Blue Cross. Right?

wink

Ron - I'm all with you. People need to understand that it is lower tax RATES that work. I will be more inclined to produce more if I am keeping 90% of what I produce as opposed to 50%. Reagan slashed taxed rates and revenue to the government doubled.

Anyone that doesn't understand that is, well - uhhh - A Liberal

Joe, your tax rate is 50%? Really?

Hi John et alia,

John, you sound like a pretty no-too-bad guy to me. The only thing I would quibble about is your homophobia. Now, I'm not getting into any arguments with you or anybody else about homosexuality. I know and have known some gays on a professional level, and we've always gotten along fine, even though I'm straight. In the real world, not everybody is straight, and that is something we all have to accept.

Other than that, I agree with you. And keep in mind that others do to, although I know for a fact that a lot of them are afraid to come in this room.

I'm not afraid, and most experienced wizards know better than to pull any mishegas with me ;-)

There you go again, making something up from nothing!! John said absolutely nothing that was "homophobic". He only expressed a correct observation that marriage is between men and women. By your remark, am I correct to presume you favor the blasphemy of so-called gay marriage?

No doubt about that.

You are right, Edward, John did not say anything that was "homophobic," but he called himself a "homophobic" in his post.

"I am a hardcore right-wing homophobic hate mongerer."

Based on his statement, I got the meaning that he expressed himself based on what others in the parties would imply by his statements. He employed sarcasm in the remark "Because of my political values, I don't fit in with any left, right, or centre main stream party. All of my views disqualify me from being a member of at least one political party. I can't be a conservative because my views on economics make me a socialist in the eyes of the Tea Party types. I can't be in a liberal party because since I believe in traditional marriage, the dignity of human life and family values, I am a hardcore right-wing homophobic hate mongerer."

Does anyone reading this really believe that John IS "a hardcore right-wing homophobic hate mongerer"? I don't.

Apparently Obummer does not understand what commerce means and implies. We already have a Department of Commerce so he just wants to create another duplicate and wasteful department to staff with more bureaucrats.

Most government bureaucrats work very hard, are honest and diligent in the exercise of their duties. The problem, is that most of them have jobs that when you get down to the nitty gritty accomplish nothing of value to the nation. That is not the fault of the individuals in those jobs. It is the fault of worthless programs created by Congress and the Administrative Branch.

Can't be good if the Government is making a department for business. It either means more regulation for the business sector,
or that the government forgot its calling. It probably forgot its calling a long time ago.
