Well, you'd need an Eastern Catholic Cardinal who's fairly young (defined here as < 70).

With that, well, funny you should ask because the youngest man in the College of Cardinals (age 53) is the Catholicos and Major Archbishop of the Syro-Malankara Catholic Church, an Eastern Church founded by St. Thomas (the one proclaimed in the Gospel on Thomas Sunday, aka Low Sunday, aka the Feast of Divine Mercy). His name is Baselios Cleemis, and he was installed in the last Consistory in November of last year. He's also the first Eastern Cardinal.

So yes, if you like dark horse bets, there you are!

Just a reminder, being a Cardinal is not a requirement for election. Any Baptised, practising Catholic male is eligible.

However, the odds are fairly long that a non-Cardinal would be elected and almost non-existent that a non-ordained Catholic Man, even a very saintly one, would make it.

Rai is young... why not him?

73 is young enough. 50 is too young... the conclave wouldn't go for that unless the candidate was EXCEPTIONAL. That said, when JPII was elected, he was largely unknown... so I guess it is possible

His Beatitude Cardinal Gregory Peter XV, the Catholicos-Patriarch of Cilicia for the Armenian Catholics was the runner up to John XXIII in 1958.

When was the last Eastern pope actually elected, do you know?

Post-schism. But whether or not they adhered to an Eastern liturgical tradition at the time of their election is unknown.

Historical records show that there were Latin parishes in the Eastern Mediterranean prior to the schism.
