Pope Francis had a lunch with some priests after the Chrism mass, as reported by Vatican Radio.

He spoke very directly about the Sacrament of Penance:

Msgr. Feroci said Pope Francis urged them to be generous in offering confession.

“He said, ‘Open the doors of the Church, and then the people will come in…if you keep the light on in the confessional and are available, then you will see what kind of line there is for confession’…The Pope said he was confident of the need of the people of God for priests to open the doors and allow the people to meet God,” Msgr. Feroci told Vatican Radio.Father Mario Pasquale, who had served as a worker-priest for 40 years, told Vatican Radio that he felt “heard” during the meal with the Pope, and that he had the “feeling of being understood.”

I did not yet read the rest of the article but I really believe that this is true! If people knew it was available- it could turn hearts to Jesus!

Hi Steven and Marian,

People do want to confess their sins. I went to confession just the other day.

Years and years ago, I went to Mass at a downtown Chicago church, and afterwards, this young couple asked if they could go to confession. The priest said yes, and they went to confession. However, what was not expected is that a number of other people got in line to go to confession at the same time, including me.

Remember the movie Field of Dreams, and the expression, "If you build it, they will come"? It's the same with the Sacrament of Confession. Let the parishioners know that confession is offered, make sure the confessor is not some sort of Grand Inquisitor, and people will show up and be reconciled with God. And that is the most beautiful thing in the world.

James ☺

This is wonderful, yes. And also, for priests to always look like priests...several have told stories of being in the parking lot of a mall or store and a person approaches him asking for Confession, right there...it had been many, many years he/she had been separated from the Church and the penitent felt moved at that moment, by seeing the priest, to make a Confession. Grace at work. If the Church doors were locked or the priest wasn't in his collar, that return to the Faith might have never happened.
