I agree with Marie - it must be public and safe (naturally, you will want to drive yourself to and from the first meeting). I once read that sporting events (baseball, football) make a great first date, because unlike coffee shops or restaurants, there is little chance of uncomfortable silences. And because there is something other than oneself to talk about, namely the game (this is way critical for men, who hate to talk in general, and don't like to share personal information in particular!). So a bowling alley fits the bill to a tee. An added benefit is you can both find humor in some of the awful throws you each will make!
Meeting for coffee/soda/ice cream is good. Maybe meeting at a daytime festival or to hear some live music, too. How about volunteering together?
