One of my fathers favorite songs.
As He died to make men Holy, let us die to make men free. This is the correct and original way the song was written. The written lyrics on the video show it that way, but they sing, "let us live to make men free." I guess they have to be PC. It is a battle hymn!!
So the correct wording is, "let us die to make men free."

Words cant describe how much inspiration I draw from this song, on so many levels. First, its Van the man. His vocal style, often undecipherable, sometimes sounds as if hes speaking in tongues, channeling some spiritual magic, like the Holy Spirit. Even before knowing the lyrics, which I could make out only intermittently by listening to it, I found myself coming back to this song, again and again, not knowing what it meant, and wondering why it moved me so. Until my son said, You know dad, every time I hear this song I think of Doug (his uncle - my beloved older brother who passed away far too young from complications due to MS in 2003). Then theres the poetry itself. Drawing on William Blake, the words paint a pastoral paradise only the soul can imagine, where lost innocence of youth will be recaptured. Where we wonder in gardens wet with rain, counting the stars in our lovers eyes, vowing never to grow so old again or read between the lines, and riding our chariots down the streets of heaven crying, "Hey, it's me, I'm dynamite. And I don't know why!"
