Over-indulgence

Aug 18th 2012 new

What do you think of this? True? It seems like this is happening a lot these days and if you expect a lot from your kids, your mean or too strict.

"Recent research has uncovered that we're parenting our children differently than we were parented in several ways.

1) Indulgent behaviors toward our children. Being given too much stuff, Over-nurturing a child and soft structure (lack of rules or follow through on the rules)

2) Kids get too much and parents ask for too little in return.

Dr. Jean Illsley Clarke wrote a book with two other university professors called, "How Much is Enough?" Everything You Need to Know to Steer Clear of Overindulgence and Raise Likeable, Responsible and Respectful Children."

According to the study overindulgence can harm children in the following ways: learned helplessness, depression, obesity, poor money management skills, low self-esteem, an overblown sense of entitlement, inability to delay gratification and a lack of life skills."
