I said I don't know how true your story is or not. I didn't say your story is untrue. And I never said you lied. I suggest you read what I wrote again.

So, let me get this straight. If the government takes my money and gives it to someone else, that is "socialism", right? So, if the government takes my money and gives it to the military, that is "socialism", right? If the government takes my money and gives it to crooked banks who gambled with their depositors money, that is "socialism", right? If the government gives money to Israel, that is socialism, right?

How do you know what they spend their money on? And who is this "they" you're referring to? Is "they" a carefully sampled cohort, or is it... well, what?

Finally, lets go back to my question: Do you have any idea at all how insulting and hurtful your comment might be to anybody here who might be on what you classify as "socialism" or "welfare" or any other pejorative word you've used over the last few days?

You should brush up on Socialism, James. Lets get to your question that you are rudely addressing to Cheryl. Do you
realize that there is nothing wrong with the words "socialism" or "welfare." In fact, they are quite innocuous. You, though,
have been taught by your cohorts to put a negative slant on them and are accusing Cheryl of using words that hurt people.
These are simple words that one learns in school. Trying to dictate how a person uses language is the first sign of a progressive.
After all, we still have freedom of speech in this country. At least so far.

manipulation is the second sign....although I let him get to me and I shouldn't have....

This election with Christians voting for such an evl man....someone who believes in killing babies not just in the womb but AFTER they survived and there are TWO very distinct bodies...TWO Americans....is really too much for me when they then purport this party to be the one that cares more for the less fortunate...it just isn't true....which really started the thread as to how to take care of the less fortunate and the best way to help them.

Well, plus I was a lot of people are taking advantage in addition to the ones that really need the help...not trying to be vicious, but it is just a fact that it happens.

That's true, in the 1840s the country was not taxed to death to support the Irish. The Irish were considered lazy, stupid, people who swore allegiance to a foreign prince, and were discriminated against at every turn. Ever hear the expression, "Mad Dogs And Irishmen Need Not Apply"? During and after the Battle of Gettysburg, Irish rioted in New York because they thought freed blacks would take the few jobs that they had.

Nobody is being taxed to death here. Even as a metaphor the expression is invalid. By the bye, there was a system of welfare (of sorts) in the United States in the 19th century. The welfare system was based on the British Poor Laws.

I am glad that you are acknowledging that the blacks were not the only ones in this country treated poorly and discriminated
against. And you forgot to say how hard the Irish worked to build the railroads and the subways, and many other jobs that
required a good deal of manual work. Yet the Irish hardly complain about that mistreatment.

Yes, people are being taxed to death. In the New York Area our property taxes are so high, I would be embarrassed to tell
you what we pay. And I do know how the original welfare system was based. Even social security was for
widows and children.

Welfare is through the roof and the Government should only minimally be involved in helping the poor. Catholic Charities, Jewish
Charities and other groups should bear the brunt of charity, as well as family. Family used to help out, back in the good
old days. But since the family has so conveniently been watered down and reclassified, it might be hard to ask them to
help.

What I was saying earlier is that those charities are STILL doing most the work anyway, but our taxes keep going up and up...the money doesn't get to where it needs to go, I guess.....I just don't know what the best answer is because my fear is that people are going to stop donating....I know I'm starting to feel like the govt. is supposed to be doing it...I'm probably not alone in this.

Cheryl: The Government is not set up to take care of people. The Government is like a big umbrella agency. Its function is
to operate the military, to build interstate roads, to handle the currency, responsibility for the post office, to take care of
Federal Parks, medical research, etc. The smaller things belong to the state. And the state even has many of the
same responsibilities as the Federal Govenrment, but on a state level, a smaller level.

It can not be all things to all people, and do them well. The family unit has dimished and that is one reason their is so
much need.

Cheryl: What about when Obamacare comes in and they want to give old people a pill to kill pain and send them
home and not use too much of the resources on making them well. These are the people who paid into the system their whole life. I
heard Obama say that.

Well, it is true they can't do it well....look at the post office....going bankrupt all the time and having to be "covered" by tax payers.
