Time to sign off now, as they need me at the hospital by 6:15 AM tomorrow... and I'm a night person. A friend will be picking me up about 5:00 AM.

Sincerely,

Ed

Praying

Dec 15th 2012 new

Hi Everyone,

Thank you all so much for your kind thoughts and prayers for my successful eye surgery.

The entire surgery went very well. The surgeon said that it could not have gone better. I had a follow-up visit on Thursday and the surgeon said that the entire retina is now fully attached and now it just needs to heal and stabilize over the next 4-6 weeks. He is very happy with the result. biggrin

Before the surgery, it appeared as if a window shade were suddenly (over a day or two) pulled down over my right eye to the middle. If I put my hand in front of my eye, it would disappear as I moved it above the mid-line of the eye.... kind of scary when it happens. Now, even as soon as the follow-up visit a day later, that "shade" has disappeared and I can see all the way to the top of my eye. It is still very blurry.... I'm sure partly from the surgery but also because I can't put my contact lens in that eye (to correct the vision) for four weeks.

I believe that I was very fortunate to have been referred to this doctor. He is a retinal specialist who has performed thousands of retinal surgeries. He has been recognized as one of the “top doctors” in Sacramento by his colleagues and as a “Top doctor in America”. Also, all of the office staff and hospital staff were great. It was a total of only 48 hours from the time that I first called my optometrist on Monday morning to walking out of the hospital on Wednesday morning. It was all very efficient, fast and high-quality service.

It was a rather serious surgery, as it was imperative to do as soon as possible in order to minimize damage, hopefully avoid the need for a more invasive surgery, and increase the probability for a successful result. They did what is called a "Scleral Buckle" procedure in which they fasten a small silicone rubber band around the outside diameter of the eye and suture it permanently in place. This applies the appropriate pressure to the inside of the eye so that the retina will reattach and heal. This small band can't be seen (in a mirror) because it is hidden behind the eyelids. Fortunately, this procedure worked very well and they did not have to perform the additional, much more invasive procedure, of injecting silicone oil inside the eye to provide more pressure. If this had been done, then I would have had a more serious recovery plus another operation in several weeks to remove some of the silicone oil. It all kind of makes me wince when I think about it.

I had doctors orders not to try to read at all for the first couple of days, as it would cause the eye the jerk. As it turned out, he really didn't have to tell me this because it was quite painful (to my right eye) whenever I would move either either side-to-side. I really didn't do much the last couple of days except rest in my chair, listen to the radio or TV and get lots of sleep. Today the pain has reduced considerably and I am more mobile.

My next follow-up visit in on Tuesday. Then I'll be flying to Washington state to see family on December 24-31.

Thanks again for all of your support. It is very comforting to have such a caring community here at CM.

Sincerely,

Ed

clap Outstanding news, Ed! So glad that you're sight is coming back. Yes, that is the exact same procedure that my dad had, so I'd say you have at least another 27 years of successful wear and tear to go, if not more! Wonderful news Ed! Continued prayers for a full healing of your eye. Just so you know, your image popped into my mind while I was in Mass on the feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe, so I can only think that she was interceding for you. How blessed we are to have such a Mother. God bless.

Thank you so much for the update, Ed. We are all so pleased the surgery went well. I will continue to keep you in my prayers for continued healing. As much as we look forward to your posts, the mother in me wants to tell you that you should limit your computer for a bit longer. But then, I am sure your wonderful doctor is your best guide in this matter.

Enjoy your family and have a very merry Christmas, Ed.
