Saint Thomas More was martyred during the Protestant Reformation for standing firm in the Faith and not recognizing the King of England as the Supreme Head of the Church.

I'm sure that could help a lot.
Inside of many/most high-technology companies, there are electronic locks on many of the internal doors in addition to the external doors. Part of this is for physical security, but it is also for controlling access to labs and other rooms that may be dangerous or may contain confidential company projects. By using electronic (credit card-like) access, individuals are given access only to the rooms/facilities that they need to do their jobs. Accessibility can be changed quickly. Also disgruntled employees can be locked from access with just a few keystrokes of a computer.
One of the teachers in the Newtown shooting did hide her kids in "a good-sized closet (her words)". If the choice is to be vurnerable inside of a classroom or else cram 30 first-graders and a teacher into a 5' x 6' closet, they will fit into a closet for 15 minutes.
Obviously, a classroom on the second/third floor would not have a trap door in the floor. Also, many schools are single story and have a mechanical room (for all of the machinery) in the basement.
One size/solution does not fit all, since every school is laid out differently.
My one particular suggestion was not meant to be an all-encompassing solution, merely one potential small piece of an complete solution. This one potential solution was provided in an effort to think somewhat "outside the box".... not to remain in the mode of "It will never work" or "But it won't work in this case" or "But it has never been done before" type of thinking.
A majority (or many) of the engineering design projects that I have worked on over my career have been "never been done before" or "it will never work" type of projects. Then we (as a team) succeed in "doing it" or "inventing it" (after much effort) and it becomes a new product or a new procedure that changes the whole way of doing things.
I am glad that you found the time and energy to respond to all of the inaccuracies and misinformation in Becky's last message. It left me feeling exasperated.
Using similar logic of blaming and putting all of the responsibility on gun manufacturers and owners..... Perhaps we should have a $100,000 annual fee levied against every obstetrician in the United States. After all, if there were no obstetricians to deliver all of the potential school shooters in the U.S., perhaps the whole problem of school shooting would just disappear.
Well, perhaps you missed the whole point of the second ammendment- to protect the people from the government, you know I do hunt for food and need protection from wild animals- not that I use a gun for either- Time to update my rabies shots though...
I don't know the numbers- but aren't they a lot more than that?
And there is no way to hit 630 with an automatic weapon- oh maybe if you shoot up at a huge concert, but falling bullets have been shown to be sublethal(not that you want to get hit by any)
I agree with all of your points above.
I see this as a problem that must be addressed on many fronts.
Same as with my eye operation last week.... I seek the prayers of friends and family and the intercession of Our Lady of Guadalupe and St. Lucy. At the same time, I also rely on the earthly knowledge and training of my eye surgeon, assistant surgeon, anesthesiologist, nurses and support staff, the care of a friend to get me to the hospital and the financial support from my earthly insurance company. All of this came together to end in a successful result. In my experience, God very often works through the earthly means.
All of the individual solutions are pieces in a multifaceted overall solution, and they should be pursued simultaneously.
Very good point Ed, and well taken. My only fear is that often we get so caught up in the "practical" we can forget that we need that help from above. Without it we're toast I think. But I take your point, and I agree with it. Thanks and if I don't interact with you before next week have a wonderful Christmas.
I think if a school is going to choose to have armed protection, some type of training of that person should be required. Not just any teacher who happens to own a gun and has a permit to carry it. They would have to be able to maintain a level head and have a good sense of how to proceed if they are needed. It would probably be a good question to ask the parents to what would make them feel more at ease.
Anyway, I think this is just short term solutions. Like others have said this country needs to turn back to God and give kids some meaningful purpose to their lives.
Again, the implementation of metal detectors and the stationing of armed police in schools is treating the symptom, rather than excising the cancer growing within. Our problem is systemic..we must first cleanse from our society the filth of Hollywood, the sheer stupidity of violent video games, the incomprehensible mayhem of abortion, and the rotten pustule of pornography before we even begin to experience God's Peace in America. Man=the most intelligent of all God's creatures. Is it only man who befouls his own nest, his own society? It is only man who allows his greatest enemy, satan, into his children's lives. Total apathy reigns in America. Few people care enough to do anything about the rot which has crept into our lives. The Trojan horse is within the gates! Sound the alarm!
"Son of man, speak to your people and say to them, If I bring the sword upon a land, and the people of the land take a man from among them and make him their watchman; and if he sees the sword coming upon the land and blows the trumpet and warns the people; then if anyone who hears the sound of the trumpet does not take warning, and the sword comes and takes him away, his blood should be upon his own head. He heard the sound of the trumpet, and did not take warning; his blood should be upon himself. But if he had taken warning, he would have saved his life. But if the watchman sees the sword coming and does not blow the trumpet, so that the people are not warned, and the sword comes, and takes any one of them; that man is taken away in his iniquity, but his blood I will require at the watchman's hand."
"Upon your walls, O Jerusalem, I have set watchmen; all the day and all the night they shall never be silent. You who put the Lord in rememberance take no rest..." Isaiah (62:6)
It is my generation, me included, who closed our eyes and slept, allowing the enemy to enter the gates. That enemy, satan, through his minions, his underlings, has wreaked tremendous havoc on our children...so you, watchmen and watchwomen, Awaken.!..Sound the trumpets from one end of our land to the other end !...Shout! Fight! Write to the studios of Hollywood!Organize yourselves! Care! Write your people in Congress! Tell your priests and bishops that we must hear more trumpet-blowing from our pulpits! Support financially organizations who are fighting for the lives and souls of our children. No more false compassion! We are in the midst of a trerrible battle! They depend on us.
