We don't know what sorts of palace intrigues have been going on. The Pope has a lot of enemies in the curia.

Palace intrigues don't matter. As long as we accept the legitimacy of the pope and papal election process, the we must believe that the man chosen is GOD's chhoice for the job.

There are more than a billion Roman Catholics in the world. There's simply no way any one Pontiff can please all of them. To the extent we're not happy with the next pope or his actions, shame on us - not on him. The tail doesn't wag the dog, right?

Interesting. However, the number 7 reason is wide of the mark.

Benedict will have no say in the choice of his successor, except to the extent his selection of new Cardinals will sway the vote. He will not be part of the conclave and once the conclave begins will have no way to communicate with any participants. Even before the conclave, he is putting himself into seclusion upon his abdication. Finally, he is precluded by cannon law, as is every Cardinal and anyone else, from indulging in any politicking on the matter.

Odd that this article came out a year before the pope resigned, although the predictions of the pope's death in a year apparently were made in November of 2011. Last year intelligence analyst Wayne Madsen reported that a Vatican Spring was being planned. Something is in the works over at the Vatican.

How can you say that palace intrigues don't matter considering they undermine the Church's witness to the world? As they used to say, "The Whole World Is Watching?"

Not matter what happens, the man newly elected pope walks out of the conclave is GOD's choice. Whatever cabal or agenda there was simply became a tool in God's hands. We must have faith and trust God.

In my view the real miracle is that the Church still exists after 2000 years. Too much mystical emphasis is put on the papacy and the election of a pope. God allows bad men to become popes and bishops because people have free will. Follow God's laws and society and the Church will do well. Make up rules and the Church and society will fall apart. The Church is not falling apart because God wants it to fall apart but rather because people have disobeyed.
