Hi Maura, Glad to see you back in action! I would categorize myself as politically liberal (Shall I daresay, I like Obama?) But how are you defining "poltically liberal"?

Negative. One cannot agree with the liberal nonreason, and be Catholic. Putting aside the moral issues, economical issues and health outcomes of the left supporting abortion, contraception, euthanasia, population "control," etc....one canNOT be liberal and Catholic. They are paradoxical. Dangerously paradoxical.

On some points, you are very correct. Keep in mind, however, there not all positions on various issues generally considered "liberal" are contrary to the Church teachings.

You've decided that the doctrine of subsidiarity will automatically allow others to walk all over you. You've decided that a means of thinking about things --- which is what the doctrine is --- devised by the Church, will have nothing practical to offer you on the issue of illegal immigration. Why?

If "poltically liberal" is an abbreviation of "poltergeistically liberal", I'm led to understand that there are some who believe that all liberals do is throw stuff around and wreck the place.

Or something like that.

The trouble with 'lables' (Conservative/Liberal) is they mean different things to different people!

Sean Hannity was utterly gobsmacked to hear a Catholic priest tell him he would withhold communion for his views in support of contraception and launched into an attack on clerical abuses! Many Catholics are wafer thin in their Faith, because as humans we are very fragile people, subject to our culture & their opinions.

We need to work towards following ALL the tenets of the Faith. But this is a perfection and one which we will fall short of on many occasions. But we need to get back on the horse and keep riding.

Liberals who accept the FIVE Non-Negotiables are Catholic. 1. Pro-Life. 2. Against Euthanasia. 3. Against Embryonic Stem Cell Research 4. Against Human Cloning 5. Against Homosexual "Marriage".

Incidentally, many Conservatives Catholics aren't Catholic also. Especially if they don't accept the following Catholic Teaching.

Rights and responsibilities; Social Justice

Every person has a fundamental right to life and to the necessities of life. The right to exercise religious freedom publicly and privately by individuals and institutions along with freedom of conscience need to be constantly defended. In a fundamental way, the right to free expression of religious beliefs protects all other rights.

The Church supports private property and teaches that every man has by nature the right to possess property as his own."The right to private property is not absolute, however, and is limited by the concepts of the "universal destiny of the goods of the earth" and of the social mortgage. It is theoretically moral and just for its members to destroy property used in an evil way by others, or for the state to redistribute wealth from those who have unjustly hoarded it.

Corresponding to these rights are duties and responsibilitiesto one another, to our families, and to the larger society. Rights should be understood and exercised in a moral framework rooted in the dignity of the human person and social justice. Those that have more have a greater responsibility to contribute to the common good than those who have less.
