Single Living

My eyes flickered open early last Saturday morning. A few soft rays of sunshine were filtering through my window, and the birds in the nature preserve just beyond my apartment building were chirping jovially. I glanced up at my digital alarm clock and shook my head at the early time. I could have used the extra sleep that morning with another wedding to attend later in the afternoon…dateless I may add.

As I began to imagine how yet another family function would unfold with me unaccompanied, my eyes shifted downward to a prayer that has been tacked to my nightstand since my freshman year of college. This prayer can apply to anyone, no matter what stage in life they may be, but for me, I consider it my single’s prayer.

St. Therese’s Prayer

May today there be peace within you.

May you trust God that you are exactly where you are meant to be.

May you not forget the infinite possibilities that are born of faith.

May you use those gifts that you have received, and pass on the love that has been given to you….

May you be content knowing you are a child of God….

Let this presence settle into your bones, and allow your soul the freedom to sing, dance, praise and love.

It is there for each and every one of us.

Although this prayer has not been officially attributed to St. Therese of Lisieux, I have found solace in the simple affirmations. I begin my day reciting this prayer, oftentimes repeating the second line, “May you trust God that you are exactly where you are meant to be…” I need to trust, as we all do, that whether we are single, dating or not dating, married or unmarried, we are in the place that God has intended.

As I watched another friend say “I do,” I remembered this prayer and the freedom that comes from knowing who is in control.

I returned to school in 2005 to obtain my teaching degree, trusting God. He placed me exactly where he wanted me to be and I flourished. In 2008, I graduated cum laude. In August 2008, I interviewed for a full-time teaching position, and not hired. Oh how I wanted that job! But again, God in his infinite wisdom has placed me exactly where I am meant to be. God’s plan allows me more time to devote to my Graduate studies. I marvel everyday at the love that is mine unconditionally… and by receiving his love I am set free.
