Holy Week is upon us, and we are nearing the pinnacle of our 40-day journey: Easter.
Much deeper than Easter egg hunts and family gatherings, Easter is the culmination of our prayer, repentance and almsgiving, the core of Christianity. We honor Jesus’ resurrection and the new life His sacrifice offers to each of us. We often forget that Easter is so important in our Catholic faith that we spend 50 days celebrating it.
Each year as we speak of Jesus’ sacrifice that opened the doors to eternal life, I think of the MercyMe song, “I Can Only Imagine.”
The lyrics, based on lead singer Bart Millard’s father’s battle with cancer, speak of the sacred moment when each of us will stand in front of the resurrected Christ. What will that be like?
Surrounded by Your glory, what will my heart feel?
Will I dance for you Jesus or in awe of you be still?
Will I stand in your presence or to my knees will I fall?
Will I sing hallelujah? Will I be able to speak at all?
I can only imagine.
This Easter, we celebrate the love of God our Father who sent His only son to die for us on a cross. Through this sacrifice, we can live each day in anticipation of an eternity spent in His presence. What will this heavenly home be like?
We can only imagine.
