What if you saw someone online who interested you and found they had just moved from right nearby to another country? That’s what Tami experienced when she met Felix online.

The 31-year-old from a northern Kentucky border town made contact with the man of the same age, who’d just gone back home to Peru after spending time in Cincinnati, just across the Ohio River from northern Kentucky. Neither would’ve been unreasonable if they had concluded it wasn’t meant to be.

But they persisted.

For Felix, the persistence came in the form of a last chance—not so much for Tami, as for the whole idea of dating in general. He had greatly reduced his activity on the site and was no longer a full member. But when the chance to talk to Tami arose he decided it was worth one last chance before throwing in the towel on dating and committing himself to a single life.

After two weeks of communicating on CatholicMatch, they began to use Skype, and it was there they began to fall in love with one another.

“Our love grew from shared values, morals, beliefs and a mutual respect and appreciation of one another,” Tami said. “When we finally did meet, the affection we shared was so pure and natural because it flowed from the depth of our knowledge of one another.”

Tami made good use of the long-distance relationship in another way. When it was time to visit Felix in Peru, she treated it as not only a visit to meet a potential spouse, but as a chance to do missionary work. By taking this approach, she not only was able to do good but reduced the pressure on her meetings with Felix. Even if it didn’t go well, a special trip wouldn’t be wasted.

But it did go well.

“We laughed so hard we couldn’t breathe,” Tami told CatholicMatch, “and cried together and everything in between. Even though we were both sure of our intentions before meeting in person, the month we spent together solidified our bond.”

Felix had no intention of letting the special person in his life go back Stateside without something special. A few hours before her plane was to leave, he proposed and she said yes. In three short months he’d gone from being ready to give up on dating to one who’d found the love of a lifetime.

For Tami, the strange path they’d followed of first missing each other when he was in the U.S., to finally coming together to an engagement was further proof that “God works in wonderful and mysterious ways.”

The couple will be married in January 2012.
