As William Cullen Bryant wrote, “Autumn, the year’s last, loveliest smile.”

I like that description. Autumn’s array of color is just like a lovely smile.

I enjoy all things fall: apple picking, baking with pumpkin and spices, football games, the crisp air.

I always welcome the transition from summer to fall, ready to make soup for the first time in months and walk among the fallen leaves. I always feel ready for new endeavors at this time of year too (all the new school supplies, I suppose!). God gives us seasons so that we can enjoy his creation and embark on new things in all areas of our lives, from our faith journeys to our love lives.

Maybe it’s time to start a project or learn something new. Maybe it’s time to start a Bible study or read a new book about a saint. Maybe it’s time to enter into a new dating relationship.

Whatever this fall brings for you and me, a new season should remind us singles that God gives us seasons in our lives too, including our singleness.

So as much as you enjoy the beauty of fall, enjoy your season of singleness as well. As Ecclesiastes 3:1 reminds us, “There is an appointed time for everything,” from autumn to marriage.

Happy fall!

I like that line from Bryant a lot. It’s a good pick, but my favorite line on fall is from Keats: “Season of mist and mellow fruitfulness,/ Close-bosomed friend of the maturing sun,/ Conspiring with him how to load and bless/ With fruit the vines that round the thatch-eves run.”

I really like the Bryant line too. But also nice to have some Keats! How to load and bless the vines — good stuff. Thank you!

Great article! I think I have just realized this about fall myself, but had yet to verbalize it. The changing seasons are indeed great opportunities to embark on new journeys.

As I read each line of your article, I feel your passion for the season. I too like the Fall season, I love the vibrant colors, the crisp feeling in the air. I enjoy painting scenaries, however fall is my favorite.
