In the corporate world, every employee needs an elevator speech. In the time it takes to go from one floor to another, a driven employee should be able to state what it is they do and how their day job fits into their career goals. This 30-second statement is meant to be ready at any time – to ensure you’ve mentally organized your own goals and aspirations and that you are ready to succinctly express yourself when you encounter your next big break. It could happen anytime!
CatholicMatch member Monica-528164 recently brought the age-old elevator speech to the “Single Living” forum, challenging members to post a single sentence about him or herself. While online dating profiles give members a chance to share as much information as they like, this request forced the 200 responders to think about just one thing they would like to share with their CatholicMatch peers.
Here is a snapshot of the wide range of responses to Monica’s original post:
“I have seven grandchildren ages 6 to 21.”
“I know how to eat chocolate pudding out of a dixie cup and not use a spoon.”
“I live on an island, and I can’t swim.”
“I think one of the most amazing natural wonders in the world is watching the sunrise.”
“I always wanted to become a zumba instructor!”
“God literally led me out of Egypt after a study abroad there went awry.”
These are just six statements from the 200 replies, which serve as a reminder of how diverse and funny our member base is! Words are powerful, and you can learn a lot about an individual from a single statement, just like you would from an elevator speech.
I encourage you to view this thread of replies and contact any of the individuals that spark your interest. If you’ve also traveled to Egypt, send an emoticon to Matthew. If you’re a proud grandparent, shoot a note to Patricia. By revealing parts of ourselves, even within the framework of a single sentence, we open ourselves up to new possibilities.
Now on to that elevator speech…
