Scripture tells us when Joseph and Mary presented Jesus in the temple, there was great joy for all, including Anna and Simeon. Yet, in the midst of it all, Simeon told Mary her heart would be pierced by a sword. What a contradiction!
Although the Holy Family lived a relatively simple life to all who saw them, they were actually living an incredible life in terms of salvation history. The Son of God, the Mother of God, and a saintly father were embarking on a purpose-driven life that the rest of the world was completely blind to. Although Mary didn’t have many advance details, she knew there would be suffering. Even Simeon confirmed that fact.
Modern day life is full of suffering and if you’ve experienced a divorce, you are likely suffering on a level you never knew was possible. But like Jesus, Mary and Joseph, you, too, can live an incredible life and play a role in salvation history by suffering with love. You can turn your pain into something extraordinary by offering it up to God for the sake of others, and He, in turn, will take your offering and use it for good. Our loving Father in heaven used the terrible suffering of Jesus and Mary to redeem the world and He will take your suffering and use it, too. What a beautiful gift you can give, and in return, receive the blessings and graces you need to carry you through.
Behold, this child is destined for the fall and rise of many in Israel, and to be a sign that will be contradicted (and you yourself a sword will pierce) so that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed (Luke 2:34-35).
