What would you think if you were all set to go on your first date and suddenly you got a call that your date were sick? Just an excuse to cancel, right? Jorge got just such a call, but the 46-year-old from New Jersey didn’t assume the worst.
Jorge had a full life when he joined CatholicMatch. He had a good job working as a fiscal analyst and enjoyed a wide range of activities, shooting pool, bowling, and indulging his passion for the New York Yankees. But he wanted more, and that was someone to share that life with.
“My expectations were waning,” he said, after trying online dating at other venues and finding it wanting. “At lot of people just said the same thing in their profile. “With CatholicMatch, I figured I would have at least one common denominator and that was faith.”
It didn’t take long for him to find Valerie. She was the same age as him and right in the New Jersey area. Her profile showed up in his search parameters the first day she was on the site. A global business manager, she too, was looking for the kind of lasting relationship that Jorge was.
The couple circled each other online briefly. “I winked at her, and she winked back,” Jorge said, recalling the online equivalent of the couples observing each other across the dance floor. A week went by with no further action. Then Jorge initiated some correspondence and was direct. “I told her I had read her profile and felt like we had a lot in common,” he told CatholicMatch.
Valerie agreed, and it began two weeks of correspondence and finally it was time to set a face-to-face date. That’s when Jorge got the call. “She was sick,” he said. “Really sick.” Indeed, Valerie ended up in the hospital that night, though thankfully everything turned out okay. And one week later, they finally got together.
The same connection that existed online and over the phone was also there as they met in person. “She is down to earth,” Jorge said. “No drama, very funny and positive.” He would go on to call Valerie “the happiest person I’ve ever met.” The couple enjoys the same music, and the same type of humor, including a mutual appreciation for the TV sitcoms Seinfeld and Family Guy.
It was in April of 2012 that they first met and by this past December, they were ring-shopping together. Two days before Christmas, Jorge proposed and Valerie accepted. They will be wed this coming April, on the Saturday closest to the anniversary of their first date. It might have been a date delayed by sickness, but for Jorge and Valerie it was well worth the wait.
