This is it. This is Our Lord’s last night on earth. This is Our Lord’s last night with the ones He loves so much.
Put yourself in His shoes for just a moment… He knows He will be betrayed, not just by Judas, whose heart has grown cold and cynical, but by one who professes to love Him more than anyone, Peter. The one Jesus chose to build His Church upon, the one who professed to love Him fiercely. Despite this knowledge of their actions that would further break His heart, He imparted everything to them, loved them, and humbled Himself as he knelt on the cold floor and washed their dirty feet. What are you trying to tell me, Lord?
I have been hurt and betrayed by many, Lord. My life has been destroyed by those who laugh at me and don’t care about my pain and suffering. I look to you, Lord, knowing that it took great love to treat those who would betray you so badly with charity. Please help me to do the same, Lord. Please help me to pray for my enemies and treat those who have hurt me with dignity and charity, if only for Your sake.
If I, therefore, the master and teacher, have washed your feet, you ought to wash one another’s feet. I have given you a model to follow, so that as I have done for you, you should also do (John 13: 14-15).
