A friend of mine went through a divorce six years ago. His wife had packed up the kids and moved out, and he suddenly found himself embroiled in a nasty custody battle that left him financially bankrupt.
He stunned me one day as we spoke about what he was going through, because just when I expected him to pour out his bitterness over all these devastating losses, he simply told me that his only goal – one that he worked toward each day – was to try to see Christ in his ex-wife.
What a miracle was taking place in this man’s life… a miracle no one else could see. The world would call him “stupid,” but I call him “heroic.” What a beautiful example of charity and grace in the midst of suffering! Let us pray that God will grant us all who are suffering this gift of heroic virtue.
But I say to you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you. – Matthew 5:44
