“Let’s be friends.” They’re words that are often dreaded in the dating world, and indeed, they are sometimes used as a way to cushion a blow. But sometimes those same words lead to something much more. That’s what happened with Joe and Jessica.
Jessica was discouraged—at least when it came to her prospects for finding a match on any online dating site, and that discouragement did not exclude CatholicMatch. She was ready to cancel her membership in January 2012. Then Joe arrived.
Joe lived just ten minutes away in the northern part of Illinois, and he reached out to her. A week of messaging went on, and then Joe asked her to join him for dinner and a movie. “He was such a gentleman and gave my compliments,” the 38-year-old Jessica recalled. “I felt beautiful!”
The couple wasn’t sure where the relationship was going and they considered themselves “just friends.” What Jessica was convinced of was that 34-year-old Joe was a man God had placed in her life and she was prepared to follow the path and see where it led.
Where it led was a friendship that included traveling together. “Then it grew to love,” Jessica said. The couple began to date and their love—founded on friendship—only grew.
After nine months of dating, Jessica noticed one day that Joe seemed to be acting a little odd. In retrospect it would make perfect sense, but at the time it left her completely unprepared for what Joe had up his sleeve. “Little did I know he was going to ask me to marry him,” Jessica told CatholicMatch. “I was in complete shock and I said ‘yes’!”
Jessica may have been shocked in the moment, but the proposal was something that both she and Joe were well-prepared. Not everyone “starts as friends,” but everyone, somewhere along the line, becomes best friends. That’s what Jessica and Joe found in each other, even before they found love. They will be married next month.
