It would depend on the person you are going to meet up with, where you will be going on the date, and where you both livedon't you think???? But in all circumstances, it should definitely be somewhere SAFE! There is always safety in #'s. Go to a open public place. Starbucks, a friends house if it is somewhere local, a museum, a baseball game, etc. Where would one go if they just "normally" met someone for the 1st time? Certainly not to a dark secluded restaurant or a bar. OR..take a friend. I say, it is always better to be safe than sorry. I m a realtor, and I would NEVER take a client out alone, or do an open house alone. There are just too many "crazies" out there now. Now I am not saying that one should constantly walk in fear, but let's face ita little bit of common sense goes a LONG way! So to sum it up, somewhere public. Get to know the person first. there are just many crazy women out there as there are men. It is NOT always the men. The men need to be just as cautious. Again..common sense! OMG! here's a novel ideawhy not make your 1st date, a date to go to church!

I would consider going to have coffee or ice cream so that the couple could sit down and get to know one another in a way that is comfortable to them.

Conversation is probably the most important part of a first date. Chatting over a couple of drinks will ensure the mood is relaxed and will help to dispel any inevitable first date nerves. Choose a gastropub with bags of atmosphere, so you don't feel compelled to fill every break in conversation yourself -- the last thing you want is to choose a silent place.

The other great thing about going for drinks is that the date is casually open ended -- you can easily make an excuse to keep it short if the spark just isn't there, or can go on for dinner somewhere else if you both don't want the date to end.

I think meeting for a drink or lunch is a good way to get to know someone at first without it being considered a date. Lunch to me is confusing because I would classify that as friends until further defined. It is helpful to know it is a date. An ideal date is where things are really taking off toward a potential relationship with a future, conversation is good and there is a connection. Anywhere...probably starts with dinner.
