You know how sometimes you have a really bad date and it leaves you thinking, "Okay, that's enough dating for a little while. I need a break"? And still other bad dates leave you thinking, "Wow, there has got to be someone so much better for me out there! What am I waiting for? I want to find him!"
It was the latter sort of date that led me to find my fiance…a man who is far more incredible than I ever thought a person could be.
On the night of December 29, 2006, I was up until the wee hours of the morning searching for that profile…you know…the one that we all just hope will jump out at us and scream, "I'm the one!!" After three years on this site, and many dates later, I was beginning to think it might never happen. However, after a few hours of searching and reading through profiles until my eyes began to tear, (either out of the seeming hopelessness of the situation or just sheer exhaustion) someone did jump out at me.
Brian 208883…from PA. I'm from WI…could that ever work???? Oh well…he sounds wonderful. I'll just send him an emotigram and see what happens.
The next day, Brian sent me a short email in reply and we began to correspond. Before I knew it, I realized I was really excited about all I was learning about Brian. When he asked me, after a couple weeks of emailing, if I'd like to talk on the phone, I thought, "Oh no, here we go." I had yet to encounter a first phone conversation that left me without some real doubts. But after hanging up with Brian after our first talk, I knew that an amazing man was coming into my life.
We met about a month later for a snowy February date at the zoo. We had a great time walking, talking, laughing at the animals, and just getting to know more about each other. We went to an Indian restaurant for dinner and then ended the date with the agreement that we were both going "inactive" on this site. Something was definitely brewing! (Brian's nephew even asked him, after that first date, if he was bitten by the "Lovebug").
The reality of him being in Pennsylvania and me being in Wisconsin could have made for a very tough long distance relationship. We were very blessed, however, to have my parents in Ohio, about halfway between the two of us. (Poor Brian. It was only our second date that he already had to meet my parents and even stay at their house!) We were very thankful for this place to meet in the months to come. With such a distance between us, we were still able to see each other about every couple of weeks by meeting in the middle.
Since I'm a teacher, I have the summer off. Another blessing for us is that Brian owns the house next to his parents, so I was able to live with them over the summer and spend some quality time with Brian. I came to love his parents as my own family. After spending the summer together, Brian and I knew there was no doubt that God was calling us to spend our lives together.
I returned to Wisconsin in mid-August to resume teaching, but after a Labor Day Weekend camping trip with Brian and my extended relatives. The evening of September 2, after returning to my parent's home after camping, Brian suggested a walk to look at the stars. While walking down the country road, Brian turned to me, got down on one knee and told me that he wants to spend the rest of his life with me…would I marry him? With the world spinning around me, I told him "yes!"
We are planning to be married on June 21, 2008!! Though we will be dealing with the distance for our entire engagement, we know God's grace gives us the patience, strength, and trust to get through it. God used Catholic Match to bring us together, and for that, we will always be grateful!!!
