Chet In Alaska, Elizabeth In Texas: ‘Extreme Corners’ Of U.S.

It’s been said that the path to hell is paved with good intentions. That may be true, but it’s also true that the path to heaven is paved with those same good intentions. The story of Chet and Elizabeth is an example of the latter.

Like many others on CatholicMatch, the man from Alaska and the woman from Texas didn’t want to “settle” in their marriage choice and the people they were trying to meet. They came to the site with strict criteria for the people they were trying to meet and it was after a few months of membership they found each other online.

“We realized that we were at extreme corners of the country,” Chet said. “But that didn’t keep us from getting to know each other.”

Within a week after their online connection they exchanged phone numbers and began talking. It was only a month later they decided it was worth the investment in airline tickets to meet each other. Chet traveled the few thousand miles to go to Sunday Mass with the woman who’d captured his interest.

The meeting went smoothly and Chet described it as one that flowed like two people who had known each other for years. The Alaska-to-Texas distance or not, this was a relationship that had to be pursued. The challenges of a long-distance relationship are considerable, but for Chet it was worth the price.

Growing up in a traditional Catholic family, attending both the Latin Mass and the Eastern-rite Byzantine liturgy, he believed not just in the core dogmatic faith, but in traditional family principles. And in Elizabeth he’d found someone who believed those same things.

“We talk with each other every day, pray together and for each other and that makes the distance seem not as difficult to deal with,” Chet told CatholicMatch. The fact that  their heads were united with their hearts made that task more manageable — “…what has made this work out so well is both of us approaching our meeting with a firm understanding of what we were looking for, and once we found it, looking and praying to make sure that it was indeed genuine.”

Chet has grown up in military family and lived around the world. In Elizabeth, he’s found the woman that will be his anchor. The strong and pure intentions they began their search with ended with a little piece of heaven here on earth.
