Welcoming 50, Sticking With CatholicMatch

MaryEllen joined CatholicMatch on Friday, Dec. 28. Her profile was submitted at 6:47 pm. She vividly recalls her feelings that night.

“I had been a member of two other dating sites – the two best-known secular sites – and was completely discouraged with the quality of people I was meeting for the amount of money I was spending each month,” Mary Ellen told CatholicMatch.

“It was Christmas time, which only made those feelings of discouragement stronger. It is very tough to be single at my age when all ones friends and family are married with families. Going to the usual holiday celebrations alone can be very hard at times. So on the night I joined I saw a CatholicMatch advertisement on the side of my screen and decided to check it out. I liked the way the site was set up and thought I might have better luck in finding the kind of man I was looking for on a faith-based site. It was the best move I have ever made.”

After a few months Mary Ellen ventured into the forums and began making friends who proved indispensable when her mother – whom she had been caring for for a decade – passed away. She began meeting local members. “They became the support system I needed,” she said. “We spent almost every weekend with each other.”

Beyond the very real sisterhood she feels with these female members, Mary Ellen is grateful for the spiritual lift CatholicMatch has provided. “I have learned so much about my faith through these forums and being able talk and learn from so many other faith-filled people,” she said. “This site has been such a blessing for me and I have grown as a person and in my faith because of it. You can’t get that anywhere else. I truly believe God guided me to this site for these reasons. He knew what I was needing and saw that I got it here on CatholicMatch. I have been blessed with so much since I joined here: friends, in a very real sense family, and an increased strength in my faith.”

She’s carrying all those blessings into 2012, when the Pennsylvania resident will turn 50. That’s a milestone that can be difficult for singles, especially those who, like Mary Ellen, have never married, but she has a great attitude about it.

“I am proud of turning 50,” Mary Ellen said. “I intend to really celebrate this milestone. With all that I have been though in my life I feel it is quite an accomplishment to have made it this far still smiling and not bitter about the events of my life. Laughter comes easy to me, no matter what life throws at me.”

She chooses to focus on the positive, though she’ll admit to some struggles. “I have been blessed with many people in my life to laugh with, pray with and learn from. That’s not to say that sometimes I don’t get a little blue about the fact that I am 50 and still single. It isn’t easy to be my age and still single, and dating at my age can be a bit complicated. But I still feel I am called to the vocation of marriage and I believe God is preparing that wonderful man for me. I have full trust and faith in what God has in store for me. With all the challenges I have been faced with God has never let me down. God has not brought me this far to see me fail.”
