Ollie & Kasia Discovered A ‘Big Connection’ (Video)

Ollie was looking for something more in a relationship than what he’d been getting. The 34-year-old web developer from San Mateo, Calif., didn’t have a problem finding people to go out with, but he wanted a deeper, faith-based relationship.

“I was always going to Mass alone,” he recalled and further struggled with the tension that existed in not wanting your girlfriend to think your church activities and faith commitments were foolish. Ollie decided to do something about the problem, and a Google search on Catholic dating, led him to create a profile on CatholicMatch.

Kasia was originally from Poland and working as a nanny in the San Mateo area. She attended Mass at a church near the University of Stanford and saw the CatholicMatch ad in the bulletin. The 27-year-old didn’t hesitate in joining the site to see what might be out there.

Ollie was upbeat about the prospects for success in an online venue. “In the early 2000s it might have been a little more taboo, people getting together online,” he said. But the practice has become so common, and he already knew people who’d come together through online dating that for him it was just another way of meeting people—and one with a better chance of landing a compatible mate than going out to a bar.

He was doing a regular profile search   when he came across Kasia. He saw that she was currently online, so he sent her a chat request. She accepted and four days later they were getting together at a local TGI Friday’s.

“We had a big connection,” Ollie told CatholicMatch. They not only talked for close to three hours, but he soon met her sister, also from Poland.

The couple proceeded to embark on an eight-month courtship. The common ground of faith was naturally the most important—no longer was Ollie walking on eggshells when sensitive subjects came up. “I don’t have any fears,” he said in addressing the openness with which he and Kasia share what matters most. “If we have to argue about something, it can be about movies, not about something that close to home.”

While faith is the essential grounding point of any relationship, Ollie and Kasia share quite a few common interests as well, and both are well-versed enough in film to have a lively debate about this top, as well as music and the opera. They both love Broadway plays and one of their dates was a road trip to Las Vegas to see a performance of Phantom Of The Opera.

The subject of marriage certainly came up in the course of their courtship. Not only was this a relationship exquisitely balanced with both faith and friendship, but there were practical reasons. Kasia’s family was still in Poland and if she wasn’t going to marry, she was likely to return home. Ollie proposed to her at the same TGI Friday’s they first met—albeit relocated to a different spot nearby—and she said yes.

“We’ve learned a lot from each other, Ollie told Catholic Match. The couple continues to help one another grow. Ollie’s given Kasia an introduction to one of the most American things there is—the game of baseball. And she has opened up the treasure chest of Polish culture to him, including teaching him the language. They traveled over there to meet her family during the courtship process and Ollie shared with CatholicMatch his enthusiasm for the country’s beauty and the kindness of its people.

Ollie and Kasia were married in Poland on May 1, 2010. They are looking forward to an impending trip to Poland again, this time for her sister’s wedding and it will be their first visit to her native land as parents—in November, they were blessed with a baby girl, Julia Barbara.

From faith to friendship to helping each other grow and now as parents, Ollie and Kasia have lived the faith and been rewarded for it.

The arrival of Julia Barbara added to the joy for Ollie & Kasia.

It would be nice if this site provided not only faithed-based matches, but also common interests. I only stumble upon girls who like the outdoors, going to the mall or watching Monday night football, but no cultural activities such as going to the opera, museum, creative writing or gardening. It’s so frustrating. Also, 90% of the people here are from the United States. Very few Europeans.
