Lisa was doing what she could to put herself “out there”, so to speak in the dating world. That included a variety of online venues, but there was something missing. That something was faith.
“I knew I wanted someone that had values and a commitment to God and the Catholic Church,” Lisa said. If she was going to put herself out there, she wanted it to be in friendly waters.
She connected with Nick, and even though they lived in the same general area of northern Minnesota, they took things slow. “We started out just being friends,” she recalled. The things they were doing together inevitably drew them closer together—they took walks together, went out to dinner together, went to Mass together and met each others’ families. The process resulted in a very natural transition to dating.
“We dated for eight months before we got engaged,” Lisa told CatholicMatch. She and Nick found the pre-Cana program offered by the Church to be helpful. They went on a two-day retreat and through the different classes, and it seemed to bring out how good they were together.
The processes offered by the Church are similar to online dating in one regard—you will only get out what you put in, and Nick and Lisa both invested themselves in their growth as individuals and a couple.
Ultimately, Nick and Lisa both saw how the hand of God had been guiding them at all times, bringing them together and the right moment and the right season in their lives. In September of 2011, Nick and Lisa were married and have settled into their lives together.
“It is amazing how God surprises you,” Lisa said upon reflection. And it’s surely not incidental that Lisa and Nick both took the necessary steps to prepare themselves and make themselves available to His will.
