Be Mine, Cranky Valentine?

I'm told that Valentine's Day is a day for us to show the ones we care about how much we love them. If Valentine's Day is just like any other day, why does it make me feel so cranky?

There I said it.

I feel as though Valentine's Day is a mean girl pointing at me and laughing that I'm not dating anyone again this year. Since Cupid's arrow has missed the mark several years in a row, I would rather just skip Valentine's Day. I don't want to hear about the special roses sale or the fantastic new recipes that I can make for that special someone. And after reading the statistic on couples who get engaged on Valentine's Day, I think I'll go sulk in my room and listen to depressing music.

Why do I let this day bother me so much? Maybe it is because I feel as though everyone and their brother is dating someone—except me. This day reminds me that I would like to be married and have children—but that hasn't happened yet.

If you feel the same way about Valentine's Day, fight the urge to sit home and listen to sad music or watch chick flicks the whole night. Don't torture yourself by staying at home alone this Friday. Make plans to meet up with friends or visit someone who needs to feel loved. Take advantage of this day to show love in only the way you can.

If you need ideas about how to spend this day of love, I invite you to browse our collection of Valentine’s Day articles written especially for single Catholics. You’ll find a variety of articles that are not only helpful, but practical, and spiritual too.

As for me, I have a date with Jesus this Valentine's Day. My friends and I are going to a holy hour at a perpetual Eucharistic adoration chapel. In the quiet of that hour I will ask Jesus to reveal his plan for me—and I will be praying for all of you. I'm not sure what God has in store for me, but I am ready for the journey.

On Valentine's Day your heart may feel lonely, but take comfort in knowing that your heart is being pursued by the King of Kings. His love is real, transforming, and will bring everlasting life.

How will you be celebrating Valentine's Day? Be sure to leave me a comment below.
