Opposites Attract

After being on Catholic Match for about two years, I decided in December of 2006 to attend a Catholic Match Day in D.C. I had just graduated college and had moved to a suburb of Baltimore so I was looking for some new friends. I looked at the profiles before the event of some of the men going and I noticed a guy named John but he didn't quite seem like a match and there was another guy going on the trip who looked more interesting. Also, being a church musician who likes traditional music, I set a rule for myself that I wouldn't date anyone who posted "On Eagle's Wings" as their favorite song because I didn't think that showed creativity or deep knowledge of the Church (everyone knows that song!). John had posted "On Eagle's Wings" as one of his favorites to weed out people like me!

Since Catholic Match tells you if someone views your profile, John saw that I looked at his, so he looked at my profile. His thought was nice girl, but it will never work, thinking that I was too staunch a conservative.

Well, John and I met on the Day in D.C, got to talking, and hit it off (the other guy showed up with another girl). We both had to leave the day early, me for a staff Christmas party, John for a Church pot luck. He drove me from the place we had lunch to the place I parked my car and that gave us the chance to exchange e-mail addresses.

We went on our first date the next weekend and that is when we got caught. After our date John called his parents, who said that they tried to call him earlier. He said he was watching his Buffalo Bills (which he had before our date) but they said they called after the game. He came clean and said he was on a date. During the 20 questions that ensued he revealed that my parents lived in PA about 1hr. and 45 mins. from his parents. His mom immediately invited me to their house during the time we would be at our parents houses at Christmas. I met his parents, his sisters, his aunt, uncle, and cousin that evening. We ended up babysitting his adorable niece for our third "date", and that was that!

We dated until October of 2007 when he proposed at St. Peter's Church in Harper's Ferry, WV. There were lots of tourists that day so while John waited until some of them left the church, he took some pictures, while I listened to a tour guide who said that they just started to allow weddings at the church again (it had be under renovations). When the tourists left John came back to propose but before he could say anything I said, "that tour guide said they just started having weddings here." Well, that threw John off and more tourists came in making it unromantic (in John's view) again. So he took more pictures and when he was finished he came back and asked me to marry him.

We got married in St. Peter's Church on July 11, 2008 (7-11 is an easy anniversary to remember!) and went to Italy for a three week honeymoon afterward!
