Back in December 2008, I (Gabriel) went to Amarillo, TX with my cousins,
looking for a place to stay and practice my English. I started to
play the guitar with them in the St. John's Church. Was there when
I heard about Catholic Match, and after thinking 2 or 3 weeks, I
signed up.
It was at the beginning because I didn't know what to
expect. I sent and received a few emotigrams and finally a few weeks
later, I was talking with Sarah a girl from Massachusetts. I liked
her because we had God and the Music as our best friends, and even
when she was far, she was my friend After 3 months of being in Texas and being talking with Sarah I
had to return Mexico. Instead going near I went far from her. In that
period of time we shared songs, story, prayers and we became best
friends.
We had a date every night 6:00pm "her time", 8:00pm "my
time". We played tic-tac-toe, music, we made jokes, we cried and
even we had dinner "together". Well, she was in
Massachusetts and I was in Mexico, but the technology skype+webcam+mic was everything we needed. The distance was cruel.
By July I was boarding a plane to meet Sarah in person the
first time, I was scared and hoping she was the same I person was talking to
all thes months. She received me in the airport with a bag of Doritos 'cause she knew I liked it.
Our time together was very short, so we did a lot of activities:
swimming, hiking, we had a picnic, a dinner with her family. And
because my English is not perfect, I thanked her mom because the
delicious "soap" instead "soup" that she
prepared. A day in Boston... I think that was our favorite day. We
took the train back to her town--finally we were together breathing the
same air, seeing the same moon, that night in the train station we
had our first kiss and in way I confirmed that she was in a very
special place in my heart. Our time together was very short but the
greatest, before I returned to Mexico.
By next month she was landing now in my city, one of the more
dangerous cities of Mexico, ready to meet my family, knowing just
“gato” and “leche” in her Spanish vocabulary. And as her
family did with me, mine received her with their arms open, My family
loved her! I showed her the city, she met my friends, and my family. We
went to a carnival and we were spinning so much that by the end of
the ride we were sick. She returned her house, but now we were
boyfriend and girlfriend.
I've worked very hard since her last visit to earn enough to return
her town and have normal dates. I was working even in 3rd shift
with one goal in my mind--Sarah.
By March 2010, I was living in a small apartment 1 mile near her
house, thanks to God and the prayers. In April we went to New York to have our first vacations together. I had a diamond ring in my
pocket and the idea where and how to make the proposal, but my plans
almost ended when we had to cross the metal detectors in the Libery Statue. Luckily, Sarah remembered that we had a knife! Yes, for the
peanut butter. That was the perfect reason to go and talk with the
police officer, so I told Sarah “wait here let me talked with the
police officer” but what did she do? She followed me, I asked God
for help and He did. The Guy spoke Spanish! I explained him and he
covered me up. After the Statue of Liberty, I took Sarah to the
Empire State Building to watch the sunset, and after that I showed
her a Video in my cellphone with all our story, just before the end
of the video I started looking in my pocket, while I felt my heart
speeding up, and my body stated to shake, finally when the end of the
video showed “Te quieres casar conmigo” (Will you marry me?) I
had the ring ready in front of her eyes.
When she started crying I did cry, but when she said Yes, I kissed
her and We hugged, in front of New York City. This is my story...
there is someone out there for each people and God helped me to find
my beloved. We have our wedding on September 18.
