Corentino Never Imagined A Long-Distance Relationship

Corentino came to CatholicMatch looking for something to more. Getting dates wasn’t a problem for the 42-year-old military man, but he wanted someone that he could build a relationship around shared values and the seven sacraments of the Catholic Church.

He was able to develop quick communication with other members on the site, although not necessarily the relationship he was looking for. A nightly check of his messages usually brought new activity, but the one relationship he’d pursued with someone relatively local to his Milwaukee home wasn’t panning out.

“It was taking too long and dragging out,” he said candidly.

As things were working themselves out, he reached out to Maria. The 38-year-old from California might have been across the country, but the message itself was harmless enough. She was from the Philippines, and Corentino had spent time stationed there. “I wrote her a message in Tagalag, one of the dialects of the Philippines,” he told CatholicMatch. “She started talking right back and I had to say ‘slow down, I don’t know it that well.’” They each got a laugh out of it, but common ground around the time spent in Manila drew them together and kept them corresponding.

Corentino was up front with Maria, that he was still in a stage where he was seeing other people. Both were active in the CatholicMatch community generally, from posting in the message forums to organizing events.

The problems of a long-distance relationship also weighed on Corentino. “I could never see myself in a long-distance relationship,” he recalled. She made the suggestion that they try Skype. He was willing. And it worked.

With his previous relationship officially dissolved, Corentino had the decks of his life free to pursue Maria. They messaged, chatted and Skyped every day. He found himself drawn to her—not just the common interests they shared, but the way she would always be there for him. It was the “more” he was looking for when he came to CatholicMatch.

It was just a little more than two weeks ago that he suggested to her over the phone that they get married on Valentine’s Day. “Are you fooling?”, she asked. He assured her he was not. Maria was still skeptical. The skepticism disappeared when Corentino showed up in California and all the arrangements were made for them to wed in Beverly Hills on Valentine’s Day.

The couple has just returned from their honeymoon and is preparing to begin their lives together in California. Finding success in anything means stretching your comfort zones, and Corentino boldly stepped out of his, into a long-distance relationship and ultimately into marriage with the woman he was always looking for.
