Kathryn and Garrett, both from Kentucky, were initially cautious about online dating.
Garrett, whose priest suggested CatholicMatch after he told him that he wanted to date someone with strong Catholic views, was concerned about online dating because he thought that it would be hard to know exactly who’s behind the picture, and he also thought that someone might just be on the site to get money or find a way to rob him.
Kathryn, who joined CatholicMatch after a previous relationship didn’t work out, also wanted someone who was Catholic, but was concerned about online dating for similar reasons, and was worried that people may not be honest with her, or that someone may only want to rob or harm her.
Thankfully, this was not the case!
Kathryn had been a member for around a month, and Garrett was only a member for a few weeks before he made the first contact. The two talked for weeks, exchanged phone numbers, and after around a month of talking, they finally met in person.
Their first date was at Carota’s Pizza Kentucky. They were both very nervous, but happy to be able to spend time together. It was a simple date to get to know each other better and enjoy some pizza. They decided a second date was a good idea since they both got along and felt a connection. They then met at a halfway point for both of them.
Kathryn admitted that this time, she was even more nervous.
Since then, they have been on many simple but special dates. They even go camping periodically, which are some of Kathryn’s favorite moments and memories with Garrett.
Kathryn was initially attracted to his patience, along with his quiet nature and his general understanding. He knew she had left a relationship that was not the best, and he was very patient with her and never gave up on her. As his fiancé, she still appreciates his patience and quiet nature. He’s very willing to work with her when it comes to their relationship and dealing with the fact that they still live about an hour apart from each other. He’s very understanding of her work schedule and their living situations, and works with her and does his best to see her when they both can.
Patience was also something that drew Garrett to Kathryn.
She had patience when it came to looking for a good job and finally finding one where Garrett lives. She was also patient with the distance and him finally proposing. She never gave up on the job search and helped him to stay positive during the whole process. Her determination when it came to small things in their relationship, like communication and understanding, was also a big thing for him when their relationship had begun. He still appreciates these qualities of hers.
The proposal was very simple and a surprise...
They had gone out to eat at one of their favorite spots, and Garrett said he was going to take her on a walk to a nice creek area they had gone to when they first started dating. There, he popped the question without her having a single clue as to what was going to happen. She appreciated how simple and lovely the proposal was, and she did not even have to hesitate to say ‘yes’!
Garrett recalled a funny story where, during Adoration, he had gotten up to make his confession, and when he came back, Kathryn had to move. When she moved around to let him back in, her jeans made a huge farting sound on the pew. The sound had echoed throughout the whole church and they both had to try their hardest to not burst out laughing during Adoration when it was so silent in the church. They are prooff that awkward things can happen when you're dating...and it doesn't have to be a big deal!
Kathryn shared about a time that Garrett had gone camping with her family for the second time. This time was also his first time Halloween camping with them. He had humored her and they dressed up as Fred and Daphne from Scooby-Doo. The whole weekend was so fun showing off their costumes and spending time together in nature with family and friends.
The pair have had to overcome some distance, lack of time together, job searching, past relationship issues, and other insecurities.
Right now, they are facing a stagnate stage in life where they can’t exactly move forward much until they finally get married, which is proving to be harder than they expected.
However, their wedding is set for fall this year, and they are so excited! They plan to have traditional wedding aspects with some sprinkles of Halloween thrown in.
