Jessica's Modest Expectations Gave Way To Great Results

Jessica’s expectations were modest when she came to CatholicMatch. After going through the pain of her first marriage ending, she wasn’t in a rush to find someone. “My daughters wanted me to find a good man,” she said, recalling her initial motivation.

The early returns on CatholicMatch were as modest as Jessica’s original expectations. The first dates the 35-year-old health care worker from San Antonio went on weren’t prepared to date a woman with kids. “I was ready to end my one month trial when I responded to one last man that sounded interesting.”

Gordon was that man, a 39-year-old electrical engineer who also lived in the San Antonio area. He’d spent seven years serving his country in the Navy, had never been married and as Jessica would soon find out, he was very open to embracing her daughters as his own.

“He seemed too good to be true,” Jessica said. “I didn’t feel like typing notes back and forth forever, so I just said ‘You sound interesting, call me if you want to get to know me better.’” Her phone indeed rang.

Hiking is a shared passion for Gordon and Jessica

Gordon surprised Jessica by asking that her daughters join them on the first date. She wasn’t sure how it would go, but after ten hours together it was safe to call the date a success. He sent flowers afterward and continued to do so about every other week. “I knew I must be special to him,” Jessica recalled. “He always included a little sweet note which would say things like how he was really enjoying our time together and getting to know my daughters and I.”

The couple spent seven months continuing to get to know each other, attending Mass together each weekend and taking plenty of hikes together, their favorite common activity. “My daughters have also grown to love hiking and him as well,” Jessica told CatholicMatch. For her part, Jessica not only loves Gordon for their shared faith and shared passions, but for how good a role model and father figure he is to her girls.

Gordon has blended right in with Jessica's daughters and become a father figure to them.

Finally, at the Tower of America in San Antonio, Gordon proposed marriage and Jessica said yes. They will be getting married at her parish church this coming July, about a year after they first met.

Gordon and Jessica are staying plenty busy as the big day approaches. She is working toward her bachelor’s degree in nursing as they prepare the wedding and their new life together. “He is my best friend,” Jessica said enthusiastically. “He is everything that I could have ever asked for and more.”
